The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to develop your own personal
philosophy of nursing while examining and incorporate a nursing theory. You may or may not have a
philosophy of nursing that guides your practice.
In this assignment, you will be writing an APA paper that will allow you to write your own nursing
philosophy while incorporating a nursing theory that you feel guides your practice. The course
outcomes for this assignment. Course outcome 1, demonstrate logical and creative thinking in the
analysis and application of a theory to nursing practice.
Course outcome 3, examine broad theoretical concepts as foundational to advanced nursing
practice roles. [BLANK_AUDIO] This paper will not be a long paper for you. Some questions to
consider when writing your nursing philosophy would include, what does nursing mean to me? Why
is nursing important to me? What nursing theory do I feel best guides my nursing practice?
What are the qualities skills and values of a nurse? And how do I intend to personally impact society
through my nursing career? So take a few minutes when you start to write your philosophy and just
kinda make an outline using these questions to help guide your thoughts. [BLANK_AUDIO] As far as
your paper layout, this will be in APA format, so you will have a title page with a running head and
page number.
And then on the next page, you’ll start with your introduction about what you’re going to be
doing. And then choose a nursing theory that guides your practice, write down your thoughts related
to how you view nursing, and then provide a conclusion paragraph. Then on the next page, have
your references.
Have at least one scholarly source, usually you can connect it to the nursing theory that you’re
using. Keep in mind that some sources that are not considered scholarly would include Wikipedia,
CINAHL Nursing Guides, the McEwen and Wills textbook, Lesson Information, Webinar Content as

example of my nursing philosophy and two of the nursing theories that I feel drawn to.
One is Patricia Benner, her Novice to Expert theory and the other one is Joan Duffy’s Quality Caring
Model. So I’m just gonna kind of read you my nursing philosophy and hope that this will help and
inspire you to write yours
I feel that nursing is a science and an art that relies on the delivery of quality, evidence-based
practice nursing, and continuous nursing education. Nurses must be well-educated, culturally
diverse, physically responsible and able to welcome all nurses into our profession. As a student we
are eager to learn and help others. One of the best methods for enabling a student to become more
self-efficacy is to offer encouragement and support as they learn and utilize the desired skills without
intimidation, which leads to greater feelings of confidence.
According to Joan Duffy 2014, the Quality Caring Model challenges professionals to create a caring
environment where relationships not only matter, but they are a priority. When these positive caring
relationships exist, the outcome will be positive patient, nurse, and system outcomes. We know that
every nurse starts out as a novice and as experience and education to climb the ranks of the career
ladder based on Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory, 1982.
Even when we have become an expert in one area of nursing, we still remain a novice in other areas
which helps propel our desire for lifelong education and quality improvement. Each person has
special attributes and qualities that make a team work. Each of us has a special talent that makes
our service to others unique as we participate as part of a team.
Involvement in nursing organizations helps us have a voice at the table in regards to health care and
nursing. Community involvement in philanthropy are more ways we can bring out strength to the
front lines of our profession and our world so that we can foster those positive patient nurse and
system outcomes.
So that just kinda gives you a brief example of my nursing philosophy. So hopefully, that will help

Philosophical Approach
Philosophical inquiry promotes knowledge development; and the application of
knowledge to practice is supported by critical analysis of knowledge including evaluation
of theories (Shearer, 2015). There are underlying principles of knowledge development
which lead to generation and interpretation of theory. Underlying theoretical
assumptions can be viewed through different philosophical perspectives. Different than
a scientific approach in which systematic inquiry based on empirical observations are
used to define and explain causality in the natural world; a philosophical approach is
based on intuition, introspection, and reasoning to promote understanding of knowledge
and truth (McEwen & Willis, 2014). There are several different categories for examining
philosophical schools of thought in nursing (Polifroni, 2015). There are two dominant
philosophical worldviews foundational to nursing theory: received view and perceived
view (McEwen & Willis, 2014). Some key differentiators of these two worldviews is the
received view centers on objective context, deductive reasoning, prediction and control,
and the existence of one reality (Meleis, 2012). The perceived view centers on
subjective context, inductive reasoning, description and understanding, and the
existence of multiple realities based on perceptions influenced by setting (Meleis, 2012).
In addition to philosophical perspectives that shape our understanding and
interpretation of theory; there are also different classifications of knowledge.
Philosophical inquiry and knowledge development both increase your ability to use
critical inquiry to promote growth in knowledge and to appreciate and respect different
ways of thinking. Nurses should use different patterns or ways of knowing to broaden a
diverse perspective that supports nursing practice.
Ways of Knowing
Knowledge in nursing can be classified in several different ways. Carpers (1978)
Patterns of Knowing are one classification system of nursing knowledge. The purpose
of Carper’s theory was to identify the specific patterns of knowing which contribute to
the professional identity of nursing as a profession. Her theory integrated sources of
knowledge based on the art of nursing with the science of nursing. Carper’s analysis
provided a perspective that viewed nursing knowledge as more than knowledge gained
from science alone. The four ways of knowing include empirical, ethical, personal and
aesthetic knowledge.

The first pattern of knowing identified by Carper is empirical knowing. Empirical knowing
is based on the science of nursing which is grounded in research. It is knowledge that
can be verified through science or observation. This would include information from
textbooks, on the job experience and training. It is a factual knowledge that provides
theoretical explanations (Carper 1978) for nursing practice. Empirical knowing also
includes clinical and conceptual knowledge (Schultz & Meleis, 1988).
Aesthetic (Esthetic)
The second pattern of knowing as identified by Carper is Aesthetic (or Esthetic) knowing
which is based on the affective side of nursing in terms of feelings, expressions,
attitudes (Carper, 1978) and perceptions based on experience. This pattern of knowing
contributes to the art of nursing and provides a way for nurses to perceive unique and
significant experiences through an alternative conceptualization of practice (Pardue,
2005, p. 334). Aesthetic knowledge includes “empathy and understanding” and it is
based on the nurse’s subjective contextual interpretation of experiences (McEwen &
Wills, 2014). Orem (1985) identified the art of nursing as expression of nursing through
creativity and awareness that individual experiences will influence perception and
application. Past knowledge and experience are important considerations related to
aesthetic knowing as these provide meaning to the patterns. It is important to note that
aesthetic knowledge provides understanding beyond what can be measured through
quantitative research methods.
The third pattern of knowing is ethical. Ethical ways of knowing refer to morals and
values in nursing. It also considers respect for persons and nurse’s professional
responsibilities of service. Ethical knowing is provided through principles of practice,
codes of practice and ethical theories (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Advanced practice
nurses often face questions about what is morally correct in terms of their nursing
practice. According to Carper’s theory the pattern of ethical knowing provides
understanding about what is good and what is right in care, based on the nurses
philosophical understanding of moral choices (Reed & Crawford Shearer, 2012). In
order to make ethically sound choices the nurse must be able to clarify their values and
advocate for the patient accordingly.
The final pattern of knowing per Carper is personal knowing. This type of knowing is
considered life long and continuous and provides nurses with self-awareness that can
be used therapeutically in their relationships with patients and others (Carper 1978).
One of the tenants of personal knowing is the nurse is authentic in their beliefs and in
their role their uniqueness as a person is exemplified (Carper, 1978). The nurse should
engage in self-reflection by assessing personal knowledge along with input from others
to create a better understanding of themselves as an authentic self-versus perceived or
expressed self (Mantzorou & Mastrogiannis, 2011). Nurses must have personal
knowledge to understand health, and meaningfully impact on patient care.
These patterns of knowledge are distinct patterns but are also interrelated and provide a
foundation for nursing [theory], research, education, and practice (Holtslander, 2008).
What is reflection? Reflection takes place when a person “…
examines his or her thoughts, actions, feelings, and attitudes about a situation within the
context of his or her knowledge, experience, beliefs, and assumptions” (Asselin, 2011,
p. 2). The process of reflection is believed to facilitate learning (Asselin, 2011; Boden,
Cook, Lasker-Scott, Moore, & Shelton, 2006). Reflective writing is considered the most
effective form of reflection for fostering analytical thinking skills (Kennison, 2012).
Coleman and Willis (2015) also identified the importance of reflective writing to develop
professional confidence and promote independent learning. Writing about one’s
reflections allows learners to connect practice observations and situations with new
insights, which in turn, can be applied to future practice situations. Reflective writing has
specific benefits in education.
These include the following:

Facilitates shared learning
Promotes critical thinking
Generates new knowledge
Increases retention of learning
Promotes reasoning
Improves practice
Provides evidence of continuing development and competence (Asselin, 2011)
Another form of reflection gaining popularity in nursing education is poetry. Poetry
centers on aesthetics ways of knowing and can foster personal and professional
development (Coleman & Willis, 2015). Additionally, poetry facilitates an emphasis on
human aspects of nursing and connects ethical knowing and moral practices.
In applied healthcare disciplines, such as nursing, practice is based on theories that
have been identified and validated through research. Thus, practice, theory, and
research affect each other in a circular, cyclic, and interactive way (Melnyk & FineoutOverholt, 2011; McEwen & Wills, 2010).

Research is the key element in developing the nursing discipline.
Theories can be identified and tested in practice settings through research.
Theories guide nursing practice, as well as provide insights into situations for the assessment,
diagnosis, and patient-care interventions.
Theories render practice more effective and efficient to benefit patient care.
